What’s the difference between eMarketing, Digital Marketing, and Internet Marketing?

eMarketing, Digital Marketing, and Internet Marketing are three common terms used in the ever-growing online world, but what does each term mean? They are often used in exchange with each other and even though they do have areas that cross over, there are some clear differences between the three.

In this article, we’ll explain the key differences between each term. This will help you make the right decision for your business when choosing which forms of marketing to implement.

Internet Marketing

Internet Marketing is a great way to connect with customers online. Google Ads and other Pay-Per-Click (PPC) methods are included under the umbrella of Internet Marketing, these are some of the most in-depth and rewarding ways to market your business. Through Google Ads you can connect to thousands of potential customers across thousands of websites with visual adverts on what is known as the Google Display Network. Your website can also appear at the top of the Google search results using Google Ads too, meaning this it is one of the best places to start with Internet Marketing.

Internet Marketing also looks at Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) improvements made on your website. SEO ensures your website copy has the right number of relevant keywords and search terms people are actively looking for in your business sector. This helps tell search engines, like Google, that your website is relevant to what a customer has searched for.

Types of Internet Marketing include:

  • PPC Networks; Google Ads, Bing Ads
  • On-site Search Engine Optimisation

The main focal point of Internet Marketing is how can you best capture traffic and direct it towards your website to convert customers. But alone this doesn’t build any relationships with customers. Without this two-way communication your campaigns will not be as successful as they could be. With this in mind Internet Marketing is best used in conjunction with other forms of marketing, like eMarketing, which we’ll touch on next.

eMarketing

eMarketing is similar to Internet Marketing as it encompasses SEO and PPC practices but focuses further on building customer relations, which is key to helping to build successful campaigns. Social Media, Email Marketing and even customer review sites start to come under the eMarketing umbrella.

One of the biggest growing areas in marketing is Social Media. It’s a great way to connect to existing and potential customers, whether you’re sharing business updates or using Social Media adverts to target your perfect customer. Social Media is an affordable but rewarding way to market your business.

Types of eMarketing include:

  • Social Media; Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram
  • Online reviews; Google reviews, TripAdvisor, TrustPilot, Yell
  • Email Marketing Campaigns

Digital Marketing

Digital Marketing covers the whole of eMarketing and Internet Marketing, and more. Any form of marketing where the output is digital is classed as Digital Marketing.
Other forms of Digital Marketing include:

  • TV Adverts
  • Electronic Billboards
  • Mobile Apps and Push Notifications
  • In-App PPC Campaigns

Modern and forward-thinking Digital Marketing techniques, like push notifications from mobile apps, can be low-cost and very effective. Whereas more traditional methods, like Electronic Billboards and TV Adverts, can have much higher costs but with a lower payoff. This doesn’t mean you should avoid these methods as they can still be very effective as part of a whole campaign.

Conclusion

If you’re just talking to a friend over a coffee about Digital Marketing, then using the term eMarketing isn’t going to cost you a friendship! The use of each term really does just come down to semantics.

The most successful online marketing campaigns use a combination of techniques that compliment each other. Using Internet Marketing is great for driving traffic directly to your site through Google Ads, whereas inclusion of eMarketing helps to build relationships with your customers.
